With the high cost of fuel riding a snowmobile idea costs lots of money. For those who live in the sticks, we know that sometimes it is about the only way to get around during the tough winters up in high country. Unfortunately high fuel prices and lack of supply is taking its toll on a back countryman’s budget indeed. We must conserve fuel and one way to do this is to use more efficient lighting bypassing the electrical system.
Fuel prices have seen sharp increases in the last few years in our nation. The bumps on the trails we use can power up the headlights using electromagnetic induction technology to charge a capacitor instead of the headlights working off a battery. Currently there are some nifty micro-flashlights being used which you can buy which use a similar technique and are available thanks to the Everlite Flashlight technology research lab. These smaller flashlights work by shaking them for about thirty seconds and shine for about 6 minutes and they shine quite bright since they use a very bright LED light.

The history of LED lights is not very old. LED lights were first identified at the beginning of 20TH century by a Russian researcher Oleg V. Losev. As a profession he was a radio technician and one day he observed the diodes used in radio transmission, emits lights when electricity passes through them. His finding went without any commercial interest for long as no immediate benefits was advised and researched.
Later, the father of light emitting diodes, Nick Holonayk started his research and development on the LED. Apparently at the beginning of 1970, Nick managed to improvise the invention of Oleg. Nick is the first one to increase the brightness of LED and he also proved the coloring of these lights. Yellow and red LED lights are the contribution of him. Later on more researchers and scientists were made involved in the development and performance enhancement of the LED lights. The effort resulted in much brighter LED lights as well as more variation in their colors. With the increasing scope of commercial use resulting from the research and development by many people, LED lighting became essential for optical fiber communication structure. Still today, many telecommunications companies are using LED on their optical fiber network.
Car beautification has reached another level with the advent of LED lighting. LED lighting has a very colourful and unique characteristic that can be manipulated for beautification of landscapes, rooms, cars and any object worth beautifying.
It is now very possible to light up any place as long as the designer is sure of himself. LED lighting can add colour and aura that make a car looks cools and attractive to a potential buyer or just anybody. LED lighting tubes are now being used by car interior decorators to make the car a sight to behold especially in the night.
It is very important to note that light or lighting plays an important role in the survival of humanity. And as result, many inventors have come up with ideas to mimic the natural daylight at night. However, over the years, many inventions have been overtaken by technological advancement. Light affect the totality of human existence especially where reflection and visibilities are a major concern.
Light is also needed in the cars for easy and smooth operation by the drivers. The old incandescent lights were being used, but because of its low power output and its high energy consumptions, they were eventually replaced by LED lights which stand for Light- Emitting Diodes. LED lights are a kind of low emission lighting that does not have many of the problems associated with incandescent lights. It is very useful in the cars and homes.
If you do a lot of boondocking (no hookups while camping), then you know battery life is one of the most important things you must plan for, especially if you have a small battery bank. One great way to save a lot of power is to convert your existing incandescent lighting to LED lighting. LED stands for light emitting diode and provides light in a very different way than incandescent or fluorescent lighting sources. The biggest benefit for a boondocker is that LEDs require very little power to operate, so you won’t have to be so conscious of switching off lights when you don’t need them.
Just how much power can you save by going LED? In a typical travel trailer of say 27 feet with a super slide and a couple of bunk beds, you may have upwards of 20+ 12 watt incandescent bulbs. If you were to have all of these on at one time, you would be drawing around 20 amps of DC power. In a few hours, your single group 24 12-volt battery would be near dead. Even if you had two batteries, you wouldn’t have much left to finish out a 2-day weekend without a battery recharge.
The DARPA 2005 Challenge is a once in a lifetime chance for robotic engineers, companies and engineers to show their stuff. What is learned during such contests probably saves the Department of Defense hundreds of millions in Research and Development costs. To the taxpayers this is exceptional news indeed.
Recently I had a conversation with one of the teams, which is poised to win this years contest, although many would agree upon reviewing all these teams that they are all winners, as they bring to the table the future of robotics a frontier, which will be conquered indeed. This team told me that since they were using Off-The-Shelf Technology for their platform vehicle, meaning it was your basic SUV, that they were not sure if it had enough of a gas tank to make the whole trip. In fact since the speeds would be around 20-25 miles per hour over rugged terrain and since the vehicle would be running the modified electrical system full blast, with two alternators, RV style air-conditioning system and computer processors that it would be a gas hog? And you thought you paid a lot for gasoline? In any case this unmanned ground vehicles or UGV would be very inefficient indeed.
